For nearly a decade, a street cat in South Korea lived alone, wandering the city streets and surviving the harsh realities of outdoor life. Over the past 5 to 6 years, the cat’s once-beautiful fur became severely matted, forming thick, hard clumps on its back and sides, resembling heavy “wings” or armor. This matted fur made it extremely difficult for the cat to move freely, turn its head, or even groom itself.
The Struggle of Survival
The cat’s painful condition was a result of not being able to clean itself. With large clumps of matted fur, it could no longer move comfortably, and it struggled daily. The burden of its tangled coat, combined with an inability to care for itself, left the cat in a constant state of discomfort and frustration.
Locals often left food for the cat, but due to its skittish nature, no one was able to help directly. The cat’s fear of humans made it nearly impossible to approach. However, when the rescue team arrived, they knew they had to act quickly.

The Rescue Mission
The animal rescue team worked patiently and strategically to capture the cat. They managed to trap it while it was sleeping in a bush, bringing it to a veterinary clinic for immediate care.
Medical Examination and Discovery
At the veterinary clinic, the team was shocked to find that the cat was suffering from severe gum disease (stomatitis) and dental decay. The root cause of the matted fur was the severe pain in the cat’s mouth — it couldn’t lick or groom itself due to the discomfort. The excess saliva from its condition, mixed with the dirt and grime of the streets, caused the fur to mat and form the heavy clumps.
In total, over 345g of matted fur was shaved off — more than 10% of the cat’s body weight. The relief was immediate as the cat was freed from the physical burden of its tangled coat.
Treatment and Healing
The cat underwent surgery to remove its decayed teeth, and the veterinarians treated the severe mouth infection. After being relieved from the physical pain of its mouth and the discomfort of the matted fur, the cat began to heal rapidly. It was finally able to move more freely and even began to groom itself once again.
A New Beginning
Once a trapped and suffering creature, the cat now had a second chance at life. No longer weighed down by the heavy burden of matted fur, it was able to live more comfortably and regain its playful spirit. With time and care, the cat’s health and happiness returned, and it slowly began to trust the humans who helped it.
Now, the cat is being cared for at an animal rescue center, where it is recovering fully. It is waiting for its forever home, where it can finally live a peaceful and safe life, free from the pain and discomfort it once endured.
